Cataract Surgeon - Comprehensive Ophthalmologist

       Dr. Maureen Matthews, M.D. grew up in Youngstown, Ohio.  She earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Youngstown State University. She completed her medical school training at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown, Ohio.  After an internship at Akron City Hospital she completed an ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat in New York City.  Dr. Matthews joined her father, Dr. Paul J. Mahar, M.D., in practice in 1994, as a third generation physician in the Mahoning Valley.  Dr. Matthews is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.  Dr. Matthews is an active staff member of Mercy Health covering St. Elizabeth's Hospital and Level one trauma center and St. Elizabeth's Boardman Canpus.  She has been elected to multiple positions at Mercy Health including Chairman of Surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Boardman Campus from 2010 to 2017, and is currently Section Director of EENT for St. Elizabeth’s Youngstown.  She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. 

       Dr. Matthews offers comprehensive ophthalmology services, taking care of patients with all types of eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, and dry eyes.  Her primary practice focus is on cataract surgery.  Dr. Matthews lives with her husband in Canfield where they raised their five children.  In her spare time, she enjoys tennis, dancing, sewing, and travelling.
